“the death penalty will forever have a resounding problem: neither the place or manner of execution nor the innocence or guilt of the condemned can absolve one of the fact that the institution carrying out the sentence, as well as those who support it, is now guilty of the very crime it punished the condemned for. this is an inescapable moral paradox. we long ago established a justice system wherein the burden of proof lies with the state, not the accused to prove his innocence; in the case of mr. troy anthony davis, it appears in retrospect that the state vastly failed to establish evidence of his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. therefore we must conclude that in this case especially, the state of georgia, and by projection the united states of america, as of 11:08 this evening, is now guilty of the very crime it condemned mr. davis to die for.”
